HVRC has adopted a section of the Cross County Trail and recently participated in the Ribbon Cutting Celebration Ceremonies throughout the county on May 6th. Linda Andress and Nancy Rice set up a table of refreshments courtesy of HVRC down at the ring for hikers and bikers who were coming through from Great Falls on their way to Laurel Hill in Lorton. Beverly Dickerson, Katya Rucker, and Nicol Chancler rode Forrest, Dardan, and Willy from the jumping ring over to the Oak Marr Recreation Center for their ribbon cutting. There Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, Gerry Connoly, Providence Supervisor Linda Smyth, members of the Park Authority Board, Park Staff, and the public gathered to celebrate the Cross County Trail, the primary north-south trail that runs from one end of the county to the other. The horses were a big hit with children and adults. One of the more moving incidents occurred as the trio was riding from the Rec Center over to the ribbon cutting location. A blind woman was being escorted along the path and heard the horses behind her. She said that she would love to pet the horses. The horses stood while her escort guided her hand to Dardan's nose. Dardan stood quietly while she petted him and then everyone continued to the ceremony. In all the speeches, at Great Falls, Oak Marr, other sites and at the last of the multiple ribbon cutting ceremonies at Laurel Hill, equestrians were mentioned as significant users of the trail.
